252 awards

252 Scheme

The 252 award scheme is designed to help archers become confident shooting increasingly further distances whilst having their achievements recognised.

It is an award scheme in use at many archery clubs in the UK and applies to all archers, irrespective of age, ability or bow type. We did a little piece about it for general public consumption which you can read here.

The Rules

  • Imperial, five-zone scoring on a 122cm target face.
  • Six sighters to be followed immediately by three dozen scored arrows.
  • The three dozen arrows may be shot alone. However, we strongly encourage archers to use the first three dozen of a longer Imperial round where possible.
  • Awards must be claimed in sequence. You can’t for example claim a black badge until you have a white one.
  • The 10 yards “Green” badge is for juniors only and is optional.
  • Scores need to be achieved twice to qualify for the award. These do not have to be shot in the same season.
  • Qualifying scores for a given distance for the same bow type must be shot on different days.
  • Qualifying scores for a given distance for different bow types may be shot on the same day.
  • Qualifying scores for different distances may be shot on the same day provided the shortest distance is shot first and then longer distances are shot in award order.
  • To make an award claim, two signed, dated and witnessed score sheets need to be submitted to the club’s Records Officer.

Awards will be presented to successful archers at a club shoot following submission of 2 scorecards, or can be collected from the records officer if unable to attend the shoot.

The maximum score for three dozen arrows with five zone scoring is 324, so 252 for recurve means an average arrow score of precisely 7 (9 × 252 / 324). A score of 280 for compound is an average around 7.8. For longbow, 164 means an average of 4.5 and 189 for barebow is an average of 5.25.
